Environmental Stewardship

Our primary goal is to leave Padar Island and the surrounding archipelago healthier than we found it. We implement this through concrete, measurable actions:

• No Single-Use Plastics: All our Phinisi cruises have been 100% free of single-use plastics since our inception. We provide guests with reusable water bottles and use filtered water systems onboard. All provisions are sourced with minimal packaging.
• Marine Conservation Partnership: We are a proud corporate partner of the Komodo Survival Program. A portion of every booking is donated directly to their research and conservation efforts for the Komodo dragon and its habitat. We also facilitate guest lectures with their field researchers.
• Carbon Offsetting Program: We calculate the carbon footprint of each expedition, including vessel fuel and domestic flights. We then offset 100% of these emissions through a partnership with Jejak.in, an Indonesian platform that supports local carbon sequestration projects like mangrove reforestation in Flores.
• Reef-Safe Practices: We exclusively provide reef-safe, biodegradable sunscreen for all our guests. Our guides are trained to enforce strict ‘no-touch’ policies during snorkeling and diving activities and ensure our vessels use designated moorings to prevent anchor damage to coral reefs.

Community Empowerment

We are dedicated to ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism are shared directly with the local communities of the Komodo region.

• Local Employment & Sourcing: Over 85% of our crew and on-the-ground staff are hired from local towns and villages in Flores, including Labuan Bajo and surrounding communities. We prioritize sourcing our fresh produce, fish, and coffee from local markets and farming cooperatives, creating a direct economic link.
• The ‘Sekolah Terapung’ (Floating School) Initiative: We are the primary sponsor of a floating library and school program that serves the children of remote fishing villages like Papagarang and Mesa Island, providing access to books and supplemental education that would otherwise be unavailable.
• Support for Traditional Crafts: We facilitate ethical and non-intrusive visits to villages known for their traditional ‘tenun ikat’ weaving and Manggaraian wood carving. We ensure that 100% of the proceeds from any crafts purchased go directly to the artisans.
